High school is overrated; Karolyne's Blog

8/8/2022

For many growing up, high school has had a notorious reputation for seeming exponentially more significant than it really is. The football games, the parties, being known. These false perceptions of what the ideal high school scenario looks like...

Time to move forward and appreciate the past; Christian's Blog #4

8/8/2022

I don’t think I can ever thank Andrew enough for assisting me throughout the college process and for introducing me to three amazing mentees. Draft after draft...

It is finally here; Christian's Blog #3

5/24/2022

I am still in shock that I am now considered an Ivy League student. Just recently I enrolled into the College of Engineering at Cornell University and will begin my classes August 22nd. It isn’t just the beginning of my classes but the beginning...

The definition of Home; Liora's Blog #3

5/24/2022

How does one define home? Is it the place you return as the day grows old, with your comfy and safe bed? Maybe it's the place that holds all your childhood memories? Many people have different feelings about their home and different definitions for its role in their life, yet we often take this word for granted...

Living up to your own standards; Karolyne's Blog #3

5/24/2022

For the majority of my life one thing has rang true: I have always wanted to live up to certain standards. I dealt with a lot of expectations put onto me from a young age once my family noticed I was very academically driven. I don’t blame them though, because it is human nature to expect consistency from people...

Harnessing Gratitude; Karolyne's Blog #2

2/21/2022

Everyday that I wake up, I am grateful. I am grateful for each breath of air my body automatically takes for me- I am grateful to be here. Embarrassingly, I wasn’t always this grateful for all of the amazing things that I possess, and for all of the opportunities available to me. I recently came to a realization...

A break from reality; Christian's Blog #2

1/12/2022

“What inspiration or passion led you to choose engineering as a major… Why do you want to attend… What excites you about attending… Think about the community you come from and how you can contribute to and learn from our diverse and inclusive community…” I’ve been answering these questions since the start of September...

How to get to know someone; Liora's Blog #2

1/12/2022

In life we are granted inherent skills from breathing to knowing how to walk yet it seems to me that there is another technique that we naturally follow and take for granted: forming relationships. The concept of creating an interpersonal bond with another person...

Being my own author; Andrew's Blog #1

9/12/2021

Although it was only four years ago that I graduated from Oceanside High School, it feels like an eternity has passed. I attribute much of this time warp to the amount of self-discovery that occurred during my time at college. While I know that my future...

My priority is to give back; Christian's Blog #1

9/12/2021

Although my parents work hard, our financial state doesn’t reflect that. My dad graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and my mom graduated from Hunter University with a bachelor’s in Nursing. My dad has been...

Climb Every Mountain; Liora's Blog #1

9/9/2021

The human experience is full of hills and valleys that we continuously climb stopping along the way at the memorable time stops. As we push forward we begin to realize life will constantly loop the same question that lingers in the shadows of everything that simply is. . . .

Karolyne's Blog #1

“Who are you?”, is a question you will be asked countless times in your life. There are also countless ways one could answer this question, but in my opinion there are also countless ways you could “answer” this question and miss the mark. I truly believe that prior to being in the Empowering Education Fellowship, my answer to this question would have missed the mark by a lot. Thankfully, I get to be involved with Empowering Education and I can confidently share my answer to “Who are you?”. . .
